The WIDE-lEG Samara trousers

DId I say WIDE-LEG enough???

Samara* is a rather old pattern by Itch to Stitch. It has a really wide leg so much so that when standing it seems you’re wearing an ankle-length skirt.

An invisible zipper closes the side and that’s the “most difficult” feature of the pattern.

Because that’s an old pattern, the size range is only US 00 to 20.

The back has 2 darts and the waistband is a straight waistband.

Cobalt blue for this Samara

Because it was a project for my daughter, we had to sew a muslim. Cobalt blue wide-leg trousers were the hit trousers at the beginning of the summer so she HAD TO have a pair.

I cut a size 6, chopped the total length, and we were good.

Next, I cut this gorgeous cobalt blue crepe*, bought some coordinating thread and invisible zipper.

I also unpacked my old Janome sewing machine because I needed its invisible zipper foot. I still haven’t bought a new one for my 6700P (it needs a size 9 mm foot, the former being a size 7 mm foot.)

I also used a size 80 universal needle to prevent pulling thread from the crepe fabric.

I was almost done…when she decided that its way too wide for her liking and that I should took some width off.

OMG! I saw red and threw this poor Samara in the ‘Donate’ bin.

A few days later, I checked my own sizing against the Samara size chart. I was a size 8.

Samara has 1/2″ seam allowances. So I did what you shouldn’t do: I unpicked it all and sew it again, with smaller seam allowances.

I could do it because:

  1. it was only one size up
  2. the Samara is really generous ease-wise

You can see drag lines at the hips and the length is a bit short on me (I’m 2″ taller than my daughter).

But I like it a lot and I will sew me some Samara trousers in size 8 next.

(In case you’ve been wondering about the cobalt blue top, it’s the Brisbane top)
