Rust corduroy for a Taroko skirt

I only own one casual skirt so I can confess that I was more than happy to see Kennis looking for tester for her new skirt pattern, the Taroko skirt*.

I knew what type of fabric I wanted to use: some rust corduroy from my fabric mega box.

For a size 8:

  • The Taroko* pattern
  • 1m10 of bottom fabric
  • 40 cm of fusible interfacing
  • 1 pants zipper (20 cm mini)
  • 1 jean or regular button
  • clear elastic (6 mm width)

The Taroko skirt

This skirt pattern is available as a PDF only, with layers, and the sizing ranges from US 00 to 40.

Taroko* features elegant princess seams, front and back patch pockets.

All of the seams are topstitched, giving you some free space to experiment with variegated threads or heavier colorful threads.

Taroko* offers a contoured waistband, closed by a zipper and button.

Total length is just above the knee.

My corduroy Taroko

This rust corduroy comes from the mystery fabric mega box I bought from the Fabric Baron last year. If you want to know more about these mystery boxes, I shot a video (subtitled in English).

I really couldn’t make up my mind about the right project for this fabric: a bootcut Ginger jean since I enjoyed sewing my skinny Ginger? Dungarees?

Then came the call for testers and I knew that this fabric would make a perfect skirt, even if rust+ corduroy screams FALL to me…at least, I’ll be ready next fall!

According to the size chart, I cut a size 6 waist blended to 8 at the hips.

Blending was straightforward (if you’re new to blending, Kennis has instructions in her booklet).

Tips and tricks for sewing corduroy

Don’t forget that corduroy has a nap! If you feel it and it’s a bit scratchy, you’re not good!

Your fabric layers may shift when sewing, as if one of the layers was ‘growing’. Trying pinning or, best, use a walking foot. You could also baste by hand.

Don’t crush the pile! use a pressing cloth, do not lay your iron, use plenty of steam.

I really butchered my topstitching. I should have topstitched further from the seam line because the pile is eagerly eating up my topstitching lines.

I love that A-line shape. It’s cute and that skirt is rather quick to sew. Next on will be even quicker since I’ll skip the front pockets!
