Back to the Seventies!

It took me ages to sew this project! I had this chunky rib, a print-on-demand knit, and some chocolate suedette through Minerva’s Ambassador program. All of my ideas went through th window as oon as I had my fabrics in hand. The harsh reality of getting fabrics online.

However, once they were close to each othern I found a Seventies vibe and opted to sew a vintage-inspired outfit.

Did you think that finding the perfect top was easy? Not really!

Pattern for the top was obvious: I would use the chunky rib* for a cosy Hepburn top*.

Well…such ribs are sold as a tube and I really couldn’t fathom which size I should cut due to the extra stretch and shape of the tube.

Idea#1: bad.

No problem, I had already sewn a very close-fitting Rowan bodysuit by Megan Nielsen. It would look good in that checkered knit*. This is an exclusive print-on-demand fabric designed by What Abi Makes. It’s cute and whimsy.

But…I didn’t feel like wearing it due to body-image issues.

Idea#2: bin.

And, like an epiphany, came Idea#3: why not mixing both fabrics and sew a Hepburn top?

Chunky ribs for sleeves and collar and knit for the front/back.

Both colors worked well together, giving a vintage vibe to the outfit.

I cut a size 6, which is one size down from what I actually cut, to accomodate the extra stretch. I thought it would be cute under this dress as well.

I didn’t get my coverstitch out of the time-out corner, choosing instead to use the double needle of my Janome 6700P to hem the sleeves.

Let’s say that a lettuce edge was not in my options!

I cut that awful stuff and added a thumbhole cuff instead. I used this very clever tutorial by Oliver+S. Not really vintage, but so much better than that ‘hemmed’ edge.

The “Simple” skirt

The skirt pattern is a free pattern from Cindy. It’s only available in French, but it’s easy to translate.
