My very first Busan top

What’s better than a quick sew after long (and sometimes, secret) sewing projects? The Busan top is one top that offers statement sleeves for a “Whaouh” effect.

The Busan pattern

That’s a rather old Itch to Stitch pattern and as such, it only offers US sizes 00 to 20. It’s meant for knits with a, average stretch. That was exactly what I was looking for since my lovely blush rib knit wasn’t so stretchy (probably due to the Lurex it contained). I was drawn to this blush color instantly.

Before having it in hand, I thought that I might sew a turtle neck (like the Hepburn top), but then I got it in the mail and found it had a really nice drape.

It was perfect for the sleeves of the Busan? These pleats at the sleeve cap and the elongated cuffs really are the focus points.

I also love the narrow shoulders, which is perfect for me who usually has to narrow the top of my pattern backs.

Pattern alterations

I did a size 8 bust/waist blended to a 10 for the hips. I also shortned the total length (but not enough to my taste).

I need to take my swaybakc into account now. I’ve noticed that I have fabric pooling at the lower back, indicating a new alteration to be made. So far, I managed to skip that adjustment, but I may have more of a SB now than before.

Final Busan

From taping the pattern to sewing the hem: 2 hours top. Amazing!

I played with the orientation of the ribs to make something more visually pleasing.

This Busan top has mostly be sewn with my serger. Topstitching was done with my sewing mahcine and not my coverlock. The Janome 6700P has a great feature which is the ability to lower the rpessure of the pressure foot. That’s what you need when dealing with lightweight fabrics or knits, to prevent puckering or stretching of fabric.

So, I lowered the pressure, lengthened the stitch length, and topstitched the neckband to the neckline. However, I could do this because the neckline is a crew neck. Had it been closer to my neck, I would have needed my coverlock for more stretch in that area.

I think that this Busan top is the first of a long line of Busans! This pattern is the bomb, but I must confess I say that concerning all Itch to Stitch patterns. See my plaid Pine Cove PJs or my Mila shirt (or any other ITS pattern I’ve sewn over the years!).

Do you have a favorite pattern that you’ve sewn quite a bit (or plan to sew a lot)?
