Reusable make-up remover wipes use is in full swing in my home at present. My daughter has started using make-up and she tries stuff, removes then re-applies make-up, etc. That means that cotton pads do not last long and it was beginning to be a problem.

Mondial Tissus offered me to try their wonderful (and soooo soft) terry cloth and waffle fabrics. I had already sewn some of their fabrics for Christmas, when I did some Easy Pillow Covers.

I chose to sew some fabric make-up remover wipes and their basket.

Next week, I’ll show you how to sew a mesh bag for storing the dirty wipes and not lose them in the washing-machine!

Sewing the make-up remover wipes

It’s clearly a easy sewing project. I just had to ask my daughter what finished size she wanted (8cm x 8cm).

Fabric and notions

Cotton scraps

Terry cloth (organic -yellow- or bamboo -white) or waffle cloth

Some ribbon (optional, twill or sateen)

Thread, scissors/ Olfa cutter, ruler…

Instructions

Seam allowances are 1cm and are included.

Cut 10cm x 10cm squares in both cotton and terry cloth.

Pin right sides together.

If you want to insert a ribbon:

Stitch at 1cm from the edge, leaving an opening on one side.

Clip the corners and trim the terry cloth seam allowance in half.

Turn to the right side and topstitch. The opening will be closed while topstitching. Easy-peasy!

Let’s sew the little basket.

Sewing the wipes’ basket

Nothing terribly difficult here too. I wanted some waterproof fabric for the outer basket and I tested the water-resistant coating gel Odicoat. I’ll tell you more about it later. That’s a funny product.

Fabric and notions

Fabric (water-resistant for the outer, plain cotton for the inner basket)

Optional: some interfacing if your fabrics are too lighweight or not water-resistant.

Thread, scissors/ Olfa cutter, ruler…

Instructions

Seam allowances are 1cm and are included.

Cut two 20cm x 20 cm squares, one in water-resistant fabric and one in plain cotton.

Optional: you can interface the outer basket.

Cut four 5cm x 5cm squares as shown below:

With right sides together, insert one basket inside the other, matching the heights.

Stitch around, leaving an opening.

Turn to the right side and topstitch the top of the basket. The opening will be closed during topstitching.

You can create as many baskets as you like. Everything depends on the flat pattern.

This one has a flap. The base pattern is still the square, but it has higher sides.

This one has a slit on one side and is deeper (tutorial).

I hope that you will enjoy sewing these reusable wipes!
