My 2021 summer wardrobe: the Orosi top

by Elsa

Well, warmer days are ahead of us, we hope.

I had stopped sewing a few weeks ago, when I completely did a rehaul my sewing room. I was also feeling a bit down.

But I showed my Minerva package in a video and it pushed me to start sewing again.

Let’s start with the Orosi top, in a lovely Art Gallery cotton jersey/spandex.

The Orosi top

This awesome pattern is one of the eight patterns included in the Sew Beautiful book by Kennis Wong (available in digital and paperback).

You know how much I love Kennis’ work. Her patterns are designed perfectly; I’ve tested her Seychelles top lately, but I had also tested 2 patterns from her book, namely the Carlsbad cardigan and the Palermo dress.

Orosi can be sewn as a top or a dress. It has 2 sleeve options: either short or long. But what’s makes it really special is the neckline. I chose to sew the V-neck, but the scarf neck will be next on my Fall wardrobe list.

My cute top

I sewed a straight size 10 with no alteration. I like to dive straight into a knit pattern and then, use it as a wearable muslin. I usually has seldom modifications to make on knit patterns.

What I see is a sway-back alteration and square shoulder adjustment. The latter is quite new to me, but I’ve noticed a bunch of fabric at the upper center back lately in all my garments…

I also want to shorten the bodice and skirt (- 1 cm on each).

I don’t know if squaring the shoulders will address that fitting issue, but I have a bit too much fabric between shoulder and upper bust.

Fabric plays its part in this top. It should be light-to medium weight because of the skirt.

This knit is perfect for the job. It belongs to the Blithe Collection (Art Gallery), by Katarina Roccella. There are philosophical quotes printed against a light grey background, with tiny blue flecks. It’s extremely soft to the touch. I used all of my machines on this top: sewing machine for topstitching the band, serger, and coverstitch for the hems.

It was also my first time gathering with clear elastic. That was fun, but you need to keep the elastic taut so as not to bend your needle. Very funny and great way to gather knits.

The neckband was a bit tricky for me. I had a bit of shift in the V so I unpicked it once. It’s better, but I still have a tiny shift. It’s not noticeable unless you have your eyes fixed on my cleavage!!!

I really love this pattern and want to try other fabrics. I’d love to make solid tops for winter in modal or bamboo knit, with the scarf neck.

Have you started sewing for spring season? I do need plain t-shirts, but tend to sew more elaborate tops…!
